I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING CROSS COUNTRY FOR 30+ YEARS IN ILLINOIS…THIS IS THE DEEPEST STRENGTH OF TEAMS THAT I HAVE SEEN. I CAN SEE AT LEAST 10 SCHOOLS THAT COULD COME HOME WITH A TROPHY. THIS PREVIEW IS DONE ALPHABETICALLY…PRE-SEASON RANKINGS WILL FOLLOW SHORTLY. THANK YOU TO ALL THE COACHES THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THIS PREVIEW. GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND HAVE A GREAT CROSS COUNTRY SEASON!!!
Arlington Heights Hersey Returnees: Kevin Havel JR (4th, 14:26), Bill Wisser JR (87th, 15:28), Ross Gutzmer SR (215th, 16:26), Mitch Pajcic JR (235th, 16:43), Eric Stanton SO (243rd, 16:43), Mike McCarton JR, Mike Tisza JR, Ben Zilke SO, Mike Latonia SR, Eric Johansen JR. Outlook: Coach Tim Phillips returns 5 from a squad that finished 18th last season. The Huskies are ready to go with a great 1-2 punch in Juniors Kevin Havel and Billy Wisser. Havel is the number 2 returnee individually in the state (see comments in individual runners). Wisser has rebounded from a tough sophomore season in cross. He runs with a lot of heart according to his coach. Expect great things from him this fall.. Another junior, Mike Tisza, has used a great track season and parlayed it into a great summer of training. He has been running stride for stride with Havel and Wisser…it will be interesting to see how he runs. Coach Phillips expects a tough battle for the top seven with only one senior in that mix. Great things are in store for this squad. Their schedule has changed, trading in Peoria Woodruff for running at Peoria Notre Dame. Aurora Marmion Academy Returnees: David Grange SR (22nd, 14:49), Josh Stern JR, Jason Richmond SR, Matt Grange JR, Greg Havlicek SO, TJ Hefferman SO, Noel Van Scoit JR, Mike Weiler SO, Anthony Whittenhall SR. Outlook: Marmion should be the favorite in the Suburban Catholic Conference. XC All State Runner David Grange leads a veteran team. Junior Josh Stein has a great sophomore track season and looks to run downstate this season. The team has vastly improved over the last season, so it should be interesting to see how much they improve on their 13th place sectional finish. Aurora Waubonsie Valley Returnees: Mark Schumacher JR (116th, 15:45), Henry Lapka SR (144th, 15:57) David Schumacher JR, Ryan Shea SO, Emmet Lorenz SO, Nick Thomas JR, Jared Kolinek SR, Sean Wiggan JR, Jel Cullen JR, Mustafa Alvari SR, Pat Smyth JR., Adam Craig SR, Ben Tromblay SR Outlook: Coach David Severence will miss Brent Carius and the 4 others that graduated, but his cupboard is not bare. Brothers Mark and David Schumacher will lead this team in search of another state appearance. Watch for great things from Sophomores Ryan Shea and Emmett Lorenz. Henry Lapka could surprise a lot of on-lookers this fall. Severence has set his expectations high: “ We expect to compete with St. Charles North and Neuqua Valley for the Upstate Eight title and should qualify for the State meet.” The Warriors first major challenge will occur against Wheaton North at Peoria Woodruff on September 9. Barrington Returnees: Matt Barns JR (96th, 15:34), Dan Quarfoot JR (135th, 15:53), Kenny Fairleigh SR, Micah Koenig SO, Prashant Jayaraman SR, Mike Pfeiffer JR, Chris Samp JR, Jan Chang SR, Chase Teschendorf SR, Nate Link JR. Outlook: The Broncos have set their sights to another season without graduated seniors Nick Farina, Josh Tomek, and Mike Laugal. Plus they recently lost senior Brian Johannsen, who figured to be in the top 5, as he moved to Minnesota. Things will be a little different for Coach Ty Gorman. “We have lost some depth from last year and without Farina, we honestly don’t have the big #1 to score low for us,” said Gorman. He will have a strong pack of Matt Barns, Kenny Fairleigh, and Dan Quarfoot to depend on. Watch for some surprises from a strong sophomore group of Micah Koenig and Kurt & Kyle Stanke (twin brothers from England). Gorman is very optimistic about the upcoming campaign: “We do have the makings of a very strong pack and will probably somewhat resemble the Barrington girls’ team from last year with no superstar, but a strong pack.” This squad will be challenged early on in a tough Mid Suburban League. Bartonville Limestone Returnees: TR Pursell SR (59th, 15:16), Nick Holmes JR, Brock Williams JR, Kyle Leuken JR, Justin Stear SO, Mark Phan SO, Kyle Reynolds SO, Jimmy McMullen SR, Ryane Flatt SR, Joe Barber SO, Alex Turner SR. Outlook: Limestone returns two-time state qualifier TR Pursell to lead a great junior squad in their endeavor to qualify to run in November at Detweiller. “As a team, we are looking much better than last year,” stated Coach Clint Lafray. Nick Holmes had a great spring track season…watch for him to be strong this fall. Coach Lafray believes that his team is still on the outside looking in. But state is not run at the beginning of September…watch for them to challenge in their sectional. Batavia Returnees: Danny Liechti SR, Robbie Bloetter SO, Jared Klein JR, PJ Holt SR, Stephan Jurgens SO, Andrew Lukowicz SR, Mike Mohan SR, Corey Merchant SR, Drew Schmidt SO, Paul Jurgens SR, Foster Pollite SR, Andrew Sampson JR, Josiah Norville JR, Mike Baglier SO. Outlook: The Bulldogs return 4 from a squad that placed 10th in their sectional last fall. Mike DiDomenico will miss the leadership of graduated senior Jimmy Shafer, but look for Senior Danny Liechti to step up. The key will be finding a fifth man…They have a good group to choose from. They may be shaky early on…but watch for great things from this team as the season progresses. Belvedere Returnees: Joe Schmidbauer JR, Scott Ryman JR, Ryan Eck SR, Mike Beever SR, Derek Stone SR, Aric Latino JR, Trevor Beardsley SR, Cody Laseman SO, John Mariani SO, Aaron Kileen JR. Outlook: 4 return for Coach Troy Yunk this fall as the Bucs try to improve their 17th place sectional finish. Junior Joe Schmidbauer should be one of the top runners in the NIC-9 this fall. One runner that should be pushing to get into the top 5 is A.J. Gedewall,a sophomore transfer from Glenbard South (He ran 10:20 last spring as a freshman.). This team was running 60-70 second 1-5 splits last fall; they will need to cut down that split to have a chance to qualify for state. Bensenville Fenton Returnees: Edgar Chaidez JR, Mike Siemers JR, Kyle Werner SR, Frank Postelnick JR, Martin Heinrich SR, Nathan Smith SO, Eli Medina JR, Arnold Montenegro JR, Rob Vasquez JR, Andrew Gonzalez SO, Justin Smith SO. Outlook: The future looks bright for veteran coach John Kurtz and this Bison squad. There is tons of talent from the 5 returning Top 7 seven runners to have Coach Kurtz smiling. Juniors Edgar Chaidez and Mike Siemers should challenge for the top spot. Look for a group of super sophs led by Nathan Smith to help out. It will be interesting to see at their Early Bird Meet on September 2 against Hersey and Fenwick…a good team that will improve from the guidance of their coach. Will be tough next year. Bloomington Returnees: Ben Nathan SR (132nd, 15:52), Doug Rever JR (177th, 16:04), Joey Waldorf SR (185th, 16:08), Josh Roig SO (196th, 16:15), Andy Szabo SO (206th, 16:19)Shane McGann JR, Marcus McGee JR, Nat Smith SR, Luke Whaley JR,Bill Fitzgerald JR, Brian Peden JR. Outlook: Coach John Szabo cannot wait for the season to start. Building off of a successful track season (7:55 3200m relay), 5 return from a team that finished 25th at state last fall. “Bloomington High School is excited and looking forward to the Cross Country season,” said Szabo. Ben Nathan should be the front runner on this team, but they will rely on a Strong pack like last fall. Right now, they are the strongest school in Central Illinois…I don’t see this changing in November. Their first meet is at Hinsdale on September 2. Buffalo Grove Returnees: Clay Locke JR, Dan Rosenthal SR, Brian Cleary SR, Tom Cardwell SR, Eric Solberg JR, Eric Maher SO, Jeff Streu JR, David Krieger JR, Mitch Kazuk SO, Jimmy Just SO, Alex Harrison SO, Mike Carter SO. Outlook: This could be a re-building season in Buffalo Grove. Only 3 return from a squad that placed 7th at their sectional. Brian Cleary and Clay Locke will be front runners on this team. Coach Jamie Klotz has some good underclassman to fill in the open spots…may have growing pains early in the season, but look for them to rebound. Carpentersville-Dundee Crown Returnees: Nick Nunez SR, Ryan Enot SR, Connor Kustief SR, Mike Roos Sr, Nick Adriano SR, Dan Magnant SO, Paul Smith SO, Jordan Brown JR, Zach Miller JR, Vince Calcendo JR, Bob Morley SR, Josh Howver SR, Rob Stuper SO, Michael Hischke SO. Outlook: 3 return from last year’s top 7 led by Nick Nunez. A tough team that will grow up quickly in a tough Fox Valley Conference. This senior dominated squad will make it to sectionals, hoping to improve on their 11th place finish of last season. Cary-Grove Returnees: Ryan Weber SR (51st, 15:09), Michael Zasadil SO (104th, 15:36), Mike Klein SR (133rd, 15:52), Brad Keating SR (168th, 16:02), Mike McNamara JR (209th, 16:20),Dan Fallon JR (217th, 16:26), Chris Fitterer SR (237th, 16:44)Eric Ozarowski SR, Adam Resseguie SO, Dan Boivin JR, Brian Brian Bajorek SO, Dan Bartz JR, Jeff Boivin JR, Lars Rikordsen SR, Brett Psenka SO. Outlook: This is a very dangerous team. Coach Layne Holter returns his top 8 runners this fall. “We have a senior dominated team this year and lots of experience coming back,” stated Holter. Start with Ryan Weber, who had a sub-par junior season and looks to rebound back. Mike McNamara was the #2 runner for most of last season until injuries hit him in October. He has recovered and is hungry to redeem himself. Michael Zasadil opted for baseball last spring ( he plays very well according to Holder) and is slowly rounding back into shape. Seniors Brad Keating and Chris Fitterer had great summers and could surprise.” The guys have set their goals high,” said Holter. “This team has a great deal of potential, high expectations, and the drive to excel.” Definitely in the running to grab a trophy in November. Centralia Returnees: Travis Lavin SR (119th, 15:47), Corey Meyer SO, Derrick Schnake SO, Chris Simmons SR,Josh Stevenson SR, Micah Sensel JR, Mike Reynolds SRJordan Kuder SO, Jeremy Pender SR, Travis Westbrook JR, Luke Eck JR. Outlook: Coach JJ DeMattei welcomes back all 7 of his sectional runners for a new campaign. Travis Lavin ran in the state meet last fall and will lead this squad. It has experience but will need to have a 50 second split between Lavin and their 5th man. This team has a shot to make it to Peoria in November. Chatham-Glenwood Returnees: Neal Anderson JR (199th, 16:16), Zach Underwood SR (229th, 16:37), Brandon Johnson SR (234th, 16:42), Chris Gray JR (250th, 17:08), Greg Staley SR (253rd, 17:21) Joe Carrigan JR, Tyler Fulks JR, Josh Garrett SR, Adam Aydt JR, David Kowalenko SR. Outlook: Coach Mike Johnson lost two studs in Ryan Carrigan and Ryan Carrigan. But they do return 5 from their state meet team from last year. Neal Anderson appears to be the #1 runner. They will have to rely on a strong pack, but it should get them back to the Det in November. Crystal Lake Central Returnees: Derek Ericson SR (62nd, 15:17), Carson Sterchi SR, Max Davies SR, Steve Fenton JR, Tyler Whitfield JR, Ryan Miller SR, Chris Murdoch SR, Kyle Stoner SR, Kevin Quinn SR, Brian Clarke SR, Michael Bunseth JR, John Nechfeldt JR, Chris Camden JR, Ben Flavin SO, Charlie Strough SO, Nickolas Jannusch SO, Tom Santneci SO. Outlook: The Tigers missed running downstate last fall by 3 points. Bill Eschmann returns 4 from a team that is hungry to return To the state meet. Derek Ericson was a huge surprise last fall and has a chance to be all-state. There could be 12-15 runners challenging for a spot in the Top 7. Crystal Lake historically starts out slow, but watch for them come November. Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge Returnees: Ryan Hoklas SR (38th, 15:04), Harrison Bueno SR, Josh Horeled SR, Billy TenBusch SR, Elijah Handelsman SR, Mitch Buthod SR, Paul Wilson JR, Ben Rickman SR, Ryan Mangler SR, Eric Lawson SO, Ethan Berillo SO, Drew Wilkins SO. Outlook: Seventh at last year’s Waubonsie Valley Sectional, the Wolves look to take the next step. Ryan Hoklas could be one of the premier runners in the state. Prairie Ridge has 4 good runners, they need to find a fifth to compete. This school was running an 85-90 second split off of Hoklas…they will need to decrease that to advance. Darien Hinsdale South Returnees: Alexander Wright SR, Lee Vlcek JR, Brian Denk JR, Loren Benes SR, Derek Briggs JR, Patrick Carr SR, Max Rodrigues SO, Paulius Dragunas SO, Brandon Hummer JR. Outlook: They were young last year and had the huge misfortune of being in the toughest AA boys regional in the state. Coach Dave Jackson has a bunch that could contend for the West Suburban Gold Crown. The Hornets have 4 very good runners led by Alexander Wright, Lee Vlcek, and Brian Denk. If they find a fifth man to run with this group, Hinsdale could give their opponents problems. Downers Grove North Returnees: Luke Ryan SR (12th, 14:38), Aaron Silver JR, Alan Graves SR, Josh Blondell SR, Jacob Brower JR, Greg Deddo SR, Joe Lambert JR, Mike Lifson JR Francipiero Delmedico JR, Jared Wesmiller JR, Robert Turnholt JR, Michael Ball JR,John Sterr JR, Brett Bernatowicz JR. Outlook: It was uncharacteristic of the Trojans to miss out on running at state last year. I doubt it will happen two years in a row. Coach Will Kupisch has a strong group led by All-State runner Luke Ryan, who seems to have recovered from injuries that plagued him last fall. Aaron Silver is a sleeper who could be a top 50 runner by the end of the year. If they can keep their split under 60 seconds, this team could be a top 10 team. Downers Grove South Returnees: Devon Kelly SR, David Kappel SR, Steven Schmid JR, Phil Kroenberg SR, Chris Lechner JR, Craig Schieve SO, Tom Schuster SR, Billy Dillon JR, Matt Davoren JR, Ed Ericson SO. Outlook: Kevin Keogh’s Mustang squad season was a success last year, even though they did not make it down state. Devon Kelly and Dave Kappel return from last year’s team. Steven Schmid could be the #3 runner. This team will run against strong competition at Lyons on September 2. East Moline United Returnees: Michael Hernandez JR, Stefan Escontries SR, Jerome Harms SR, Caleb Moeting SO, Nick Gates SO, Lupe Jimenez SR, Jordan Johannsen SO Outlook: UTHS returns 3 from last year’s squad. Michael Hernandez started last year as their 5th man, ended at #2, and should be the # 1 man at the start of this season. Has a shot to make it down state. This team will grow as the season goes on and could improve on their sectional finish from last year. East Peoria Returnees: Donny Cotton SR, Shane Leiby JR, Dustin Wood JR, Nick Leiby JR, Mason Brown JR, Brandon Hardin SO, Dave Timm SR, Brock Kingsland JR, Matt Morrison SO. Outlook: All 7 runners return from last year’s sectional qualifying team. Last year’s sophomore squad was one of the best in Central Illinois and should improve dramatically throughout the season. Shane Leiby could surprise as the #1 Man on this team…could make it to state…anything can happen in the sectional they are in. This is a good team. Edwardsville Returnees: Eric Johannigmeier SR (112th, 15:40), Andrew Joselyn SR (129th, 15:52), Walter Vance SR (149th, 15:57), Devon Dudding SO (172nd, 16:02), Gilbert Flores SR (227th, 16:37),Jarrod Goodhue SR, Jacob Nelson JR, Jordan Steffaniak JR. Outlook: Should he stay or should he go? That is the question that is haunting Tiger coach George Patrylak. “Honestly, at this moment, I am a little torn on where will we will be this season.” Senior Andrew Josselyn, slotted to be the 3rd man, has not decided whether to join the team. He has two budding stars in Eric Johanningmeier and Sophomore Devon Dudding, who are running times equal that of graduated all-stater Dustin Davis. Patrylak has talent to fill the holes to equal last year’s finish. If they have Josselyn, they could be top 10 and the best team in Southern Illinois. Elmhurst York
Despite losing the Dettman Twins, David Montgomery, and Lionel Montenegro to graduation, the Dukes of York are ranked #1 in the IPTT Pre-Season Rankings Returnees: Michael Fry SR (15th, 14:40), Tom Achtien JR (17th, 14:42), Nick Kuczwara SR (26th, 14:56), Tim Jung SR (110th, 15:39) Alan D’Ambrogio, Mark Sulkin SR, Brian Spisiak JR, Steve Sulkin SO, Chris Lopez JR, Rojin Thomas JR, Michael Rizzo JR, Douglas Herrera SR, Mike Edwards SR, Carl Carbonell JR, David Way SO, Tyler Sill SO, Will McCracken SO. Outlook: This year hopes to be calmer for Joe Newton, Charlie Kern and the 4 time defending state AA champs. The Dukes shoot for #26 for Mr. Newton. The Dukes return two all-state runners in Senior Michael Fry and Junior Tom Achtien. Senior Nick Kuczwara just missed being all-state, and will need to find consistency to lead this team. Tim Jung is under sung by most onlookers even though he ran 4:23 for 1600m last spring. He could be flirting with the top 25 by the end of the year. According to reports, 20 runners are challenging for 7 spots…a typical York team. The workouts will toughen this team up. Mark and Steve Sulkin could step up, but this team is loaded with talent…and there is too much competition to get big-headed. Their first challenge comes September 23 at the Palatine Invite. The Sky’s The Limit with this team. Evanston Township Returnees: Mark Mendrek-Laske SR, Matthew D’Arcy JR, Sam Levon JR, Lars Kohlman JR, Paul Finnegan SR, Andy Hopple JR, Chris Rapisarda SR, Nick Boyer JR, Taylor Epskamp JR, Matt Marol SO. Outlook: 4 return from a team that just missed making state. Mark Mendrek-Laske should be their #1 man, but watch for Juniors Matthew D’Arcy and Sam Levon to challenge. The Wildkits started out slow last season and came within steps of making it. Watch for the same thing to happen this fall. Frankfort Lincoln-Way East Returnees: Myles Scott-Stirn JR (65th, 15:17), Ron Revord JR (91st, 15:30), Kyle Kirchner SR (125th, 15:50), Joe Hosty SR (127th, 15:51), Nathan Troester JR (203rd, 16:17), Mark Ferierra JR (214th, 16:25), Mark Crowley SR, Matt Dornbos SR, Jeffrey O’Brien JR, Mike Harris JR, Matthew Wall SR, Dan Hearne JR, Kyle Wanner JR. Outlook: Six runners return for Lisa McAllister’s squad. This is a very talented group. 4 of their top 5 have run 9:50 or faster for 3200m. This team is young, but experienced. Last season, four runners ran in the #1 slot. Myles Scott-Stirn was the most consistent. Seniors Kyle Kirchner & Joe Hosty, and Juniors Ron Revord and Nathan Troester provide back up for Stirn. The problem that plagued this team last year was consistency. A lot of that has to do with youth. This team has the talent to come back from Peoria with a trophy. But Coach McAllister will have all 5 runners on to achieve it. First meet comes up on September 2 At Lyons against Sandburg, Downers South, and Lyons. Geneseo Returnees: Dan Chenoweth SR (35th, 15:02), Blake Wyffels SR, Ryan Kotecki JR, Nate Silver SR, Josh Lodge SO.,Lucas Cropp JR, Jesse Cross JR, Bryce Borkgrn JR, Dyson Wake SR. Outlook: Don Frederick’s squad is favored to win the NCIC this fall. Led by Track all-stater Dan Chenoweth, this team has improved from last year. First meet at Galesburg Invite on 9/2, Chenoweth will be featured at Crete-Monee at the end of September. Geneva Returnees: Greg Adelman SO, Matt Bowman SR, Evan Ehrhardt JR, Andrew Isbell JR, Will Fritsch SR, Drew Hickey SO, Jake Tauschler SO, Andrew Nelson SO, Eric Young SR, Dan Dalpiaz SO, John Erb JR, Kevin Ruane JR. Outlook: Don’t be surprised if Bob Thomson’s squad cracks the Top 10 at the end of the year. A strong underclassman group led by\ Greg Adelman should power this team towards the top. This team improved dramatically last fall. Watch for Matt Bowman, he could be a top 50 runner. They believe in the pack and will win or die with it. Could be fun to watch this fall. Glen Ellyn Glenbard South Returnees: Daniel Kuhlman SR (67th, 15:18), Tim Honig SR (76th, 15:23), John Navarro SR (92nd, 15:30), Brian Billie JR (99th, 15:35), Charlie Mueller SR (140th, 15:55) Kevin O’Brien SR, Jon Brady SR, Ben Miller SO, Joe Soderberg SO Outlook: Many people are looking at the Raiders as title contenders. Coach Andy Preuss sees differently. “This is the most uncertain I have been in a few years going into a season.” But, they have a solid core returning. Senior John Navarro has emerged after a strong track season as the #1 runner. Senior Dan Kuhlman is the top returnee for this team and should be in the hunt. Tim Honig was at band camp for 5 weeks and is slowly returning to shape. Junior Brian Billie is still facing health issues, according to Preuss, and could be a question mark. Charlie Mueller had a strong summer and appears to be fit. Also watch for Sophomores Ben Miller and Joe Soderberg to push for a top 5 spot. “We have no MacTaggarts or VanDenends to give us a low number at this point,” said Preuss. ”Hopefully we can have 5 in the top 60 in November.” This team could be dangerous by November and driving back to Glen Ellyn with a trophy. Hoffman Estates Returnees: Matt Perez SO, Chris Sutphen JR, Emilio Savage JR, Josh Perez JR, Steve Karlson SR, Dan Hernandez JR Steve Wolinski SR, Jim DeSalvo SR, Justin Sanfillipo SR, Jimmy Nicoliesen SR Outlook: Coach Matt Dowd has a talented, young squad returning to challenge for a spot at state. Sophomore Matt Perez and Junior Chris Sutphen improved during last fall’s campaign and should be running amongst the MSL’s elite. Meet experience will improve this young team. First challenge will come at Fenton on September 2. LaGrange Lyons Township Returnees: Jake Discipio SR (134th, 15:53), Neil Driscoll SR (143rd, 15:56), Paul Busse SR (167th, 16:01) Kevin Campbell JR, Sam Kehoe JR, Drew Peterson SR Sam Francis JR, John Hamilton SR, Ryan Patena SR, Anthony Carrano JR, Paul Smith JR, Kevin Kearney SR, Alex Lyons SO, Mike Janusek SO, Peter Bruton SO. Outlook: Even though Jacob Nachel has graduated and only 3 return from last year’s team, this squad maybe stronger than last year. There is no established front runner, but watch from a strong pack of Seniors Jake Discipio, Neil Driscoll, Paul Busse, and Juniors Kevin Campbell and Sam Kehoe to form a successful nucleus. Lake Forest Returnees: Timmy Lyons SR, Blane Schultz SR, Andrew DeWar JR, Matt Engel SR, Tony Scarim SR, Will Amarantos SR, Will Chaney SR, Joe Dilenschneider SO, Scott Anderson SO, Kelly Stevens JR, Sam Brown JR. Outlook: Tom Meagher’s squad is considered the favorite for the North Suburban Conference. Timmy Lyons will challenge for the conference crown and could qualify for state. Lincolnshire Stevenson Returnees: Robbie Eckardt SR (84th, 15:27), Oliver Rose SO (207th, 16:19), Barrett Wood JR (247th, 17:01), Johan Laker JR, Evihan Vaszily SO, Bryan Smoot SR, Eric Capilis JR, Chris Waitr SO, Mark McGrady JR, Anush Vasikaran JR, Lin Bo JR, Patrick Howard JR., Nick Arun SO. Outlook: Don Proft lost All-State Runner Tim Entwistle, but returns 3 from last year’s 20th place state squad. Robbie Eckardt could be All-state, but Coach Proft will need Sophomores Evihan Vaszily, Nick Arun, and Tyler Bartlow to step up to get the Patriots back to Peoria. Lisle Benet Academy Returnees: Nick Geyer SR (75th, 15:22), Matt Clifford SR (86th, 15:28), Nick Marchese SR (152nd, 15:58), Brian Schroeck SR (175th, 16:03), Robby Olp SR (192nd, 16:13), Kevin Cleary JR, Mark Tancredi SR, Jeff Tarullo SR. Outlook: I think this might be one of the most underrated teams in the state. Coach Kevin Renicker returns 5 seniors that finished 15th last fall. Coach Renecker likes the energy the team creates and how it forces each other to work harder. Nick Geyer and Matt Clifford are the front runners for the Red Wings. “Overall, the boys and I are excited about racing and seeing the hard work pay off,” said Renicker. This team could be at full stride come the end of September at Peoria…they will be tough at state in November. Lockport Township Returnees: Joe Targosz SR, Kyle Engnell JR, Will Branda JR, Ryan Piotrowski JR, Matt Andorf SR, Jason Stanponato JR, Matt Corea JR, Matt Bohdan JR. Outlook: The heartbreak story of last season. Tom Razo’s squad was ranked during the season and could not make it out of a super tough Hinsdale Regional. The Porters should challenge this fall led by Senior Joe Targosz and Kyle Engnell. Their first real challenge will be at Peoria Woodruff on September 9. Machesney Park Harlem Returnees: David Whitmore SR (159th, 15:59), Austin Allton JR (224th, 16:34), Austin Eddy JR (259th, 17:53), Chris Behling SO, Jason Hutcheson SO, Chattman Olson JR, Lucas Steidinger SO. Outlook: Could be an interesting season for Richard Johnson’s squad. David Whitmore is the top returnee from this state meet squad. Lots of questions about depth…but still can challenge for the NIC-9 crown. Metamora Returnees: TJ McMorrow JR (80th, 15:25), Bill Miller SR, Sam Ingram SR, Brandon Pfaff SR, Ben Seckler SR, Cory Shoopman JR, Matthew Winkler SR, Jeremy Ball SR, Ryan Klassing JR Outlook: I can see this team making it to state. Gene Jones’ squad finished 8th last fall and return 5 from that team. TJ McMorrow is one of the best runners in the Peoria area and will lead this Redbird group. Bill Miller was injured for a good portion last fall and will need him to be healthy for success. Mt. Prospect-Prospect Returnees: Dave Anczyk SR (45th, 15:07), Arthur Baptist SR (73rd, 15:21), Keith Renaud SR (189th, 16:09), Mike Styzek JR (194th, 16:13), Kevin Hayek SR, Mike Longpre JR, Alex Brewer JR, Tom Lawler JR, Nick Troutman JR, Alex Manaois SR, Brandon Haas SR. Outlook: Will be tough to challenge last season’s 4th place finish after the graduation of Ryan Craven and Mike Murray. Mike Stokes will count on Seniors Dave Anczyk and Arthur Baptist to lead the way. Kevin Hayek ran in spots in the top 7 last fall could be in the top 7. Reports also have a great freshman class coming to Mt. Prospect and pushing for a top 7 spot. Could be heading back to Peoria in November as a team. Mt. Vernon Returnees: Timo Dalm SR, Caleb Cross SO, Joshua Williams JR, Jeremy Williams JR, Campbell Walters SO, Ryan Schmidt JR, Perry Boah SO, Blake Bernard SO, Kyle Lonas SR. Outlook: Coach Clint Turner returns all 7 runners from last year’s sectional qualifying team. Watch for the Rams tochallenge for the South Seven Squad. Minooka Returnees: Josh Keck SO, Andrew Sartillo JR, Nicholas Rousonelos SR, Brian Papp JR, Kevin Bokowski SR, Brian Bokowski SO, Julian Hostello SO, Ray Liberatore SR, Justin Bersano SR, Ryan Kelley SO. Outlook: Kevin Gummerson’s squad has a good summer and will challenge Plainfield Central in the newly formed Southwest Prairie Conference. Nick Rousonelos and Sophomore Josh Keck will be the top 2 runners. Watch for Freshmen Sean Coyle and Kevin Smith to challenge for a top 7 spot. Naperville Central Returnees: Steve Couch JR, Matt Somers SR, Pat Brophy SR, Timothy Murphy SR, Brandon Gittelman JR, Kevin Murphy SO, Steven O’Donnell JR, Evan Thayer JR, Robertas Senkevicius JR, Prateik Kumar SO. Outlook: 4 runners return for Coach Neal Duncan from last year’s top 7. Steve Couch is a star after a great track season. He could be in the Top 10 by the end of the year. He has the talent and work ethic to do it. This team did not make it out of a tough Hinsdale Regional last fall…they should go farther this year. Naperville Neuqua Valley Returnees: Chris Derrick JR (43rd, 15:06), Tony Parast SR (141st, 15:56), Jim Riddle JR, Connor Shields SO, Mike Ruff JR, Kevin Grady JR, Bryan Winek SO, Danny Pawola JR, Josh Budnik JR, Lucas Cotter SO, Brian Morenus SO, Sam Shupe JR. Outlook: Looks may be deceiving. Coach Paul Vandersteen only returns two from last season’s top 7. “ We are very young" said Vandersteen, “but we put in the best summer of any team I ever coached.” Junior Chris Derrick emerged as the #1 last year and appears to be set in that position. According to Vandersteen, look for Junior Jim Riddle and Sophomore Danny Pawola to be in the mix for the top 5. Only one senior, Tony Parast, should make the top 7. They may be young, But Coach Vandersteen will get the best out of these men. Naperville North Returnees: John Sadlik SR (58th, 15:16), Kyle Sleik SR (95th, 15:33), Dan Harper JR (106th, 15:37), Paul Boyer JR (113th, 15:43), Blake Fisher SR (115th, 15:44) John Newman JR, Bryan Arturo JR, Kyle Gibson SO, Jake Cusack JR, David McWilliams SO, Mike Trattner SR, Derek Box JR, Andrew Wong SO. Outlook: A tough, tough team. Coach David Racey returns 5 from last year’s 5th place team. “We had a very good training summer training wise,” said Racey, “The best thing is that we had a better track season than the xc season to build on.” According to Coach Racey, several of the younger guys have jumped over state returnees. Junior Dan Harper is his clear #1. Sophomore Kyle Gibson and Junior Jon Newman appear to be 2-3. The Huskies should have 14-15 guys challenging for the top 7. Competition is healthy. Racey knows how to peak his men….watch for them in November. Normal Community Returnees: Caleb Young JR (233rd, 16:42), David Vanderlaan SR (236th, 16:43), Logan Campbell SO (244th, 16:56), Tyler Pinter SR (257th, 17:47), RJ Baldwin JR, Tim Brungard SR, Drew Mueller JR, Nic Patti JR, Johnny Smart JR, Jacob Miskulin JR. Outlook: Normal will have some challenges this fall…like how to replace their graduated top 3. A well balanced squad, will struggle Early but will challenge by state-series time. Normal Community West Returnees: Cory Nanni SR, Jonny Kaufmann JR, Jess Hollinger JR, Reed Basting JR, Drew Frey JR, Tyler Tarmann SO, Eric Yoder SR, Adam Kapraun JR, Brent Basting SR. Outlook: West High has two studs leading them in Cory Nanni and Jonny Kaufmann. After that, there is a 1-minute gap between 2 and 3. That gap will need to get smaller for them to get better. Oak Park Fenwick Returnees: Jordan Kramer SR (103rd, 15:36), Patrick McGillen JR (195th, 16:14), Brooks Smith SR (212th, 16:24), Ryan Shannon JR (249th, 17:08), Brian Barron SO, Jack Gancer JR, Tom Laser SO, Matt Connelly JR, Jack Boyle SO, Michael Yerkes SO, Andres Jurevics JR. Outlook: With the loss of Jack Gertsner and Mark Spadevecchia, this year’s team has some big shoes to fill, according to Coach John Polka. They have the talent to fill them. Fenwick will not surprise anyone this fall. Seniors Jordan Kramer and Brooks Smithshould be the first two. After that, their 3 through 7 should be tight. Could be better than last year, will challenge Loyola for the CCL. O’Fallon Returnees: Josh Eickmeier SR (123rd, 15:48), Jack Tierney SR (208th, 16:20), Nathan Rice SR (221st, 16:29),Tyler Stierwalt JR (251st, 17:08), Emmanuel Jenkins JR, John Lucas SR, Gage Owens SO, Luke Sanchez SO, Lee Wise SO., Josh Dunbar SR. Outlook: Edwardsville Coach George Patryak thinks that this team will challenge them…I would have to agree. Josh Eickmeier is running strong and should challenge for top runner in southern Illinois. Jon Burnett has a good squad, but the depth could hurt if the injury bug hits. Orland Park Sandburg Returnees: Justin Smith SR (19th, 14:46), Brad LaRocque SR (41st, 15:05), Kevin Adamowski SR (49th, 15:08), Tom Sideras SR (111th, 15:39), Mike Marbach JR (155th, 15:58), Mike Young SR (193rd, 16:13), Chuck Archer SR (223rd, 16:30), Anthony Girton SR, Elliott Havel SO, Brian Chalpaski SR. Outlook: “We at Sandburg will not be running for second place” That is the rally cry from Coach John O’Malley and the rest of his runners as they face the upcoming season. All seven runners from last year’s state team return. Kevin Adamowski, Justin Smith and Brad LaRocque will lead this team. Coach O’ Malley projects these 3 in the top 15 at state. The big question will be the split between 3-4…if they can maintain a small split, look out state. This team has been training for this moment the last 4 years. The question that they face is: “Is it their time?” They believe so….they are tough…maybe the deepest in state. They should bring a trophy back to Orland Park…will it be first? Palatine Returnees: Mat Smoody JR (24th, 14:52), Sagar Patel SR (52nd, 15:10), Kevin O’Brien JR (90th, 15:29), Alex Mourousias JR (169th, 16:02), Matt Detloff SR, Esberaldo Gonzalez SR, Eddie Lopez JR, Ulyses Reynoso SR, Kevin McClair SR, Chris Perry SR, Matt Anderson SR, Tom Laskowske SO, Vlad Nouikov SO, Dan Rakaric SR. Outlook: Chris Quick’s team will still be tough, even after losing State Champ Steve Finley and Glenn Morris to graduation. This team could be as strong as last year’s team. All-State returnee Mat Smoody will lead this squad followed closely by Seniors Sagar Patel, Matt Detloff, and Ulyses Reynoso. Juniors Alex Mourousias and Kevin O’Brien were in the top 7 last fall and figure to be there again. This is a strong team that will face challenges from Schaumburg in the MSL and the rest of the state at Detweiller. They had a great summer of training…will that lead to another 2nd…or maybe higher? Plainfield Central Returnees: William Grimm SR, Alex Contreras SR, Kyle Enke SO, Ryan Johnson SR, John Lullo SO, Tom Wisniewski SR, Frank Sottosauto SR, Anthony Palacz SR, Matt Atkinson SR, Ryan Schramer JR. Outlook: Favorite in the newly formed Southwest Prairie Conference, this team looks forward to bounce back from a disappointing Sectional performance. William Grimm was injured all last season and is fully recovered. He will be the #1 man Central was missing last year. This team is deceptively strong….could challenge for a state spot in November. Rockford Guilford Returnees: Andrew Mills JR, James Noonan JR, Matt Shutt SR, Alec Hagmann JR, Sam Lenz SO, Matt Maggio SO, Vasyl Solonynko JR, Kyle Lundin SO, Mychall Cornejo SO. Outlook: A tough front 3 of Mills, Noonan, and Shutt could lead to possibly a state meet birth. This team does not have much depth,so staying healthy will be a key for this group. Will challenge for the NIC-9 title. Rockford Jefferson Returnees: Nicholas Roeling SR (130th, 15:52), Hector Pacheco SR (154th, 15:58), Aaron Kleczkowski JR (218th, 16:27), Mauricio Sanchez SR (226th, 16:36), Matthew Johnson JR, Trevin Murphy-Culvey JR, Kevin Winger JR, Jared Riley SO, Mike Nunez SR, Andrew Brown SO. Outlook: This team has no superstars…but look for them in Peoria again in November. They live by the pack and look for the same formula for success. Another team in the hunt for the NIC-9, but could challenge Bloomington the top team in this sectional. Rock Island Returnees: Kyle Staley SR (150th, 15:58), Travis Anderson SO (188th, 16:09), Scott Schroeder-Sparkman (205th, 16:19), Justin Begyn JR, Christopher Leiby SO, Kevin Moroni SR, James Henderson JR, Devin Winegardner SR, Jordan Cox SR, Josh Rice SR, Eric Christensen SO. Outlook: The top squad in the Western Big Six Conference, Coach Michelle Lillis returns 3 from a team that finished 22nd a year ago. Kyle Staley had a good track season and this should be a stepping stone to a good track season. Lillis will need help from Sophomore Travis Anderson and Juniors Scott Schroeder-Sparkman & Justin Begyn to have a chance to return down to Peoria. Staley should be the front runner for this team…a projected tight 2-5 pack will lead to success for the Rocks. Rockton Hononegah Returnees: Ryan Jacobs SR (23rd, 14:52), Robert Anderson SR (97th, 15:35), Ron Leonhardt SR, Jordan Wolf SR, Daniel Rohrer JR, Anthony Magaruh JR, Jordan Lang SR, Craig Worrall JR. Outlook: Coach Richard Johnson returns an all-state runner in Ryan Jacobs and a state qualifier in Robert Anderson to the 2006 squad. 4 others return from a talented but not deep squad. Could end up winning the NIC-9 and possibly making it if their 3-5 split is cut down to 20 seconds. St. Charles North Returnees: Scott Spear JR (105th, 15:37), Zach Johnson SR (120th, 15:48), Bryan Barker SR, Rhett Morici JR, Matt Miller SO, Max Clink SO, Steve Miller SO, Mike Young JR, Tim McDonnell SO, Pat Manser JR, Steve Kelder JR, John McShane JR, Chris DeSilva JR. Outlook: A season of change has hit the St. Charles North campus. The 3rd place team in AA last fall graduated 5 seniors and have lost the coach who led them Reed Vostal, who now works in another school district. Not to fear, the North Stars should not miss a beat this fall. Assistant Coach Joe Parks, who coached the distance runners last spring takes over a young but talented group. At the time I am writing this, it is hard to say who the #1 man will be. It could come from Senior Zach Johnson or Juniors Rhett Morici or Scott Spear. A huge question is whether Junior Chris DeSilva, who ran sub 4:20 last spring as a Sophomore will go out for cross-country or will play soccer. (Editors note- DeSilva has announced he will be running Cross Country this year.) Even without him, this team will be very tough and will challenge for the conference squad. If DeSilva does run, it brings a completely different dynamic to this team. Salem Returnees: Justin Helpinstine SR, Jordan Jones SO, Adam Wilkins SO, Drew Shetley JR, Jaren Lusch SO, Ben Hoe SR, Wes Villalubos SR, Luke Mobley SR, Kevin Sager JR, Jacob Kubicki SO Outlook: Coach Mike Hargis returns 6 from a team that will be tough in the Centralia Sectional. Last season this squad averaged a 60 second split from 1-5. If they can get it down to 40 seconds on projected #1 runner Senior Justin Helpinstine, Salem may be packing their bags to run in Peoria in November. It is a young squad…how consistent will they be? Schaumburg Returnees: Mike Spain SR (61st, 15:16), Jon Roberts SR (98th, 15:35), Joey Myszka SR (136th, 15:54), Jim Link (148th, 15:57), Nathan Rutz SR (176th, 16:04), Erich Seimetz JR (238th, 16:44), Brian Burkhardt JR, Eric Snyder JR, Taka Soai SR, Chris Gomez SO, Joey McNamara SO, Ben Heitkolter SO., Tim Leskiewicz SR. Outlook: The Saxons have the talent to be one of the top teams in the state by year’s end. 6 return from a team that placed 12th in AA. Coach Jim Macnider has set simple goals for his team. “Our goals are to improve on our MSL and State meet finishes. I think we could be a top 5 team.” It starts with Seniors Mike Spain, Jon Roberts, Jim Link, and Joey Myszka. All ran 700 + miles over the summer. Coach Macnider also looks for Juniors Nathan Rutz, Eric Steinmetz, Brian Burkhart and Nick Penev to be in the hunt for the top 5. One surprise could be Senior Tim Lesiewicz, who according to Macnider, has shown dramatic improvement over last fall. A Freshman that also may challenge for a spot is Pat Lesiewicz, who Macnider believes has the potential to be the best ever to run in the Schaumburg program. This team is loaded and the desire to go for a trophy. Their first test in a big meet will be at Lake Park on September 9th against Naperville North. Springfield Returnees: Aaron Osborne JR (181st, 16:07), Brad Walwer SO (216th, 16:26), Conner Brown SO (232nd, 16:41), John Edwards SO, Tom Jamison JR, James McLendon JR, Sam Morse SO, Andrew Wise SR. Outlook: It may be tough for Coach Dan Develin to repeat last year’s performance of qualifying for the state finals. The Senators will be young this year with only 1 senior projected to be in the top 8. Junior Aaron Osborne should be the #1 runner for this team. A lots of ups and downs for this team, but they have the talent to make a return trip. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin Returnees: Chris Frank JR (124th, 15:49), Colin McCormick SR (178th, 16:04), Jacob Wear SR (198th, 16:16), Jacob Midden SR (210th, 16:22), Dan McMahon JR (222nd, 16:30), Patrick Ryan JR (242nd, 16:49), Zach Jones JR, Devin Mapes SR, Austin Mudd JR, Matt Wolfson JR. Outlook: Ed Gaffigan’s team should challenge Edwardsville for southern Illinois supremacy this fall. 6 runners return from a team that surprised many on-lookers last fall. SHG ran in a tight pack for most of the year, until Junior Chris Frank stepped up to be the #1 runner. They will have the same kind of tight pack this fall. This team will be better than last season. They could challenge for the top 15 team wise at state. Sycamore Returnees: Derek Campbell JR, AJ Dickerson SR, Stefan Hueber JR, Peter Grimson JR, Tim Roloff JR, Alex Courtney JR, Nick Fagan JR, Matthew Gilmer SO, Connor Bolander SO, Quentin Scott JR. Outlook: Sycamore just missed making it down state last fall. Coach Mike Lambdin returns 5 talented runners that will challenge Glenbard South in the newly formed Western Sun Conference and should take the next step down state. Lambdin had his team running a consistent 30-40 second split last fall. If he can move up the pack by 10 seconds, Sycamore may make its first AA State appearance. Tinley Park Andrew Returnees: Matt Rychel JR, Brandon Groede SR, Kevin Omahen SR, Will Scott JR, Connor Williams SR, Chad Linhart SO, Andrew Viola JR, Andrew Lewis JR, Robert Joseph JR. Outlook: Coach Bob Matz is excited about the possibilities for the Thunderbolts this fall. Andrew will have a solid front four led by Junior Matt Rychel. Seniors Connor Williams, Brandon Groede, and Kevin Omahen will provide a good 2-4 punch. This team will be greatly improved over last fall and could surprise a lot of people in the south suburbs. Wheaton North Returnees: Chase Kadlec JR (55th, 15:13), Ryan Mademann JR (139th, 15:55), Graham Farnsworth JR (153rd, 15:58), Justin Soderlund JR (229th, 16:37)Colin Christensen JR, Brian Schlick JR, Josh Simpson JR, Matt Willems SR, Josef Gidey JR, Matt Hafer SO, Cam Most JR, Sean Bohmer SO, Tom Larson JR, Andrew Koeher JR, Jack Vebber SR. Outlook: A talented junior-laden squad has Coach Nate Roe trying to keep goals very low keyed in Wheaton. “We’ve talked about finally cracking the top 10 as a bottom-line goal,” said Roe. “I know that this might be low-balling things with this group, but we try to set realistic goals first and then work on high end goals.” Junior Chase Kadlec had a great summer and looks to go after individual all-state honors. Fellow Juniors Graham Farnsworth, Ryan Mademann, Colin Christensen, Brian Schlick, and Justin Soderland provide enough depth and experience to give Coach Roe an opportunity to achieve these goals. The chemistry is good on this squad according to Roe…”Many teams look good on paper, but not been able to finish it. We hope not to be one of those teams.” The Falcons could challenge for a trophy. Wheaton-Warrenville South Returnees: Michael Haggerty JR (79th, 15:25), Winston Zack SR (162nd, 16:00), Peter Casa JR (170th, 16:02),David McHale JR, Joseph Savage SR, Eric Noll JR, Michael Murphy SO, Matthew Mitchell SO, Gregory Patricoski JR, Tyler Cipriano SO, Joel Morrison SR, Ramuaas Stanciauskas SR. Outlook: Coach Greta Havey has a tough task of replacing graduated leaders Jon Popejoy and Kyle Brady, but she has the talented to choose from. Junior Michael Haggerty had a dramatic improvement as the season went on last fall and should be the #1 runner on this team. Winston Zack, Peter Casa, David McHale, and Michael Murphy should challenge for the other top 5 spots. The Tigers may not have the front runners they had last year with “Pope” and Brady, but they will have a tight pack that will challenge to get down state. Wilmette Loyola Academy Returnees: Tom Robbins SR (56th, 15:14), Brian McGuire SR (202nd, 16:16), Eddie O’Connor SR (211th, 16:22), Matt Heinz SR (230th, 16:39), Brian Rice JR (246th, 17:00), Dan Steinfels JR, Jeff O’Connor JR, Tyler Frient JR, Patrick Tobin JR, Tim Castellini SR,Billy Forde JR, Peter Servatius JR. Outlook: The big question for Coach Dan Seeburg is who will be the fifth man… “We will go as far as our four returning seniors will take us”. It will start with stud Tom Robbins and Matt Heinz, who was injured during the state series last fall and looks to make a strong come back. Brian McGuire and Eddie O’Connor are penciled in to the other spots. The Ramblers are co-favored with Fenwick in the CCL. If they find that fifth man, they could return down to the State Meet. Winnetka New Trier Returnees: Colin Gazley SR, Lucas Konopka SR, Mike Schmidt JR, Alexander Hegevall-Clarke SR, Daniel Chun JR, Bradley Williams SR, Scott Weber SR, Andrew Gern SR, Daniel Rosenbaum SR, Matthew Gaines SR, Nicholas Wakenight SR, Michael Green SR. Outlook: The Trevians just missed qualifying last fall. Chas Gillespie is gone…but Coach David Wisner has talent on this team. They may be better than last year. Alex Hegevall-Clarke was injured at conference last fall and was the key why New Trier could not qualify. He is healthy…Colin Hazley should be up front with him. Junior Mike Schmidt and Seniors Brad Williams and Lucas Konopka should be in the mix. Wisner has simple goals… “ We hope to defend our conference championship and return to the State Meet after a two-year absence.” INDIVIDUAL PREVIEWS
Evan Jager, SR, Algonquin Jacobs 3rd – 14:23 The number one returning runner in the state and the nation. All eyes will be on Algonquin this fall. Jager ran some great times in track (8:50y, 4:08y, 1:51r). He has the talent and the desire to push after the magical 13:50 that a runner from Lebanon (Craig Virgin) achieved 34 years ago. Kevin Havel, JR, Arlington Heights Hersey
4th – 14:26 The one runner who could challenge Jager. Ran great in track (9:10, 4:18) and is miles ahead in training over last summer according to Coach Tim Phillips. “Last Summer, Kevin missed the first three weeks due to a trip to Italy, so this summer has him many miles ahead. The great thing about Kevin is that he knows how to peak mentally at the end of the season.” If sub 14:00 is to be achieved this fall, Havel could be the one pushing the pace. Mark Battista, SR, New Lenox Lincoln-Way Central 10th – 14:34 The injury bug hit this all-stater last spring. He ran 9:24 early in the season. He looks fully recovered and looks to be the top runner in the South Suburbs. Luke Ryan, SR, Downers Grove North
12th – 14:38 Stress fractures slowed this senior down last spring, but Ryan looks fit going into this campaign. Has the talent to be in the top 5…has grown mentally over the last 2 years to get him to that point. Michael Fry, SR, Elmhurst York 15th – 14:40 York Alumni look to the lead Duke seniors and say “now it’s your turn” every season. Now it is Michael Fry’s turn to lead the Dukes. He will take his place in the spotlight this fall. Ran 4:23 and 1:59…has speed and toughness. Tom Achtien, JR, Elmhurst York 17th – 14:42 Could be the #1 man at York by state meet time. Achtien was held back somewhat last fall (although he placed high at Peoria Notre Dame and Crete Monee). Has 4:20 mile speed. Another runner with that York toughness…could challenge in the top 5. Justin Smith, SR, Orland Park Sandburg 19th – 14:46 A surprise to many last fall, Coach John O’Malley says that Smith is the “real-deal”. He doesn’t have the talent, but has that inner-strength that pushes him to achieve. Has the ability to push himself to extreme limits. He will be no surprise if he finishes in the top 10 this November. David Grange, SR, Aurora Marmion Academy 22nd – 14:49 Talent + Toughness = David Grange. Ran 4:16 in the spring and should challenge for a top 10 spot this fall. Ryan Jacobs, SR, Rockton Hononegah 23rd – 14:52 One of the top runners in central Illinois, Jacobs returns for one final run for the top 5. Has the strength to challenge Jager and Havel. Mat Smoody, JR, Palatine 24th – 14:52 Could be in the top 5 this fall. Smoody had a great training summer. Runs with reckless-abandon, will lead the Pirates to great things this fall. Nick Kuczwara, SR, Elmhurst York 26th – 14:56 Just missed being all-state last fall, should be up there this season. Has great speed and a wicked kick. Needs to develop more consistency. If he runs with Fry and Achtien, York could be tough, tough, tough. Dan Chenoweth, SR, Geneseo 35th – 15:02 Emerged last spring as one of the premier runners in the state. Ran 9:14y at the end of the year. Was coming up short last fall against Jacobs and graduated Winnebago senior Jeremy Stevens, don’t look for this former prep Iowa all-stater to come up short this time. Noble Schermerhorn, SR Deerfield 36th – 15:02 Has better than average speed…ran in the shadow of graduated Dan Bailey for some of the season, then broke out. Should be all-state this November. Ryan Hoklas, SR, Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge 38th – 15:04 Looks to return to state this fall with his team rather than an individual. Was able to push Jager at conference and regionals last fall, looks for another successful season this year. Brian Lane, SR, Johnsburg 39th – 15:04 Overlooked senior from a small AA school, Lane looks to rebound from a sub-par track season. Brad LaRocque, SR, Orland Park Sandburg 41st – 15:05 Coach John O’Malley expects great things from his senior. One of the cogs to success for Sandburg. Consistent runner, could be in the top 15. Chris Derrick, JR, Naperville Neuqua Valley 43rd – 15:06 Was a surprise last year, will not be this year…has talent and guts…will lead Neuqua back to state. The ultimate team runner. Dave Anczyk, SR, Mt. Prospect-Prospect 45th – 15:07 Should emerge as the Knights #1 runner…good speed…had a good summer…ready to be in the top 20 at state. Kevin Adamowski, SR, Orland Park Sandburg 49th – 15:08 Adamowski has taken a lot of criticism for his performance of last year. “If anyone is at fault for his letdown at state last year, it is me”, said Coach John O’Malley. Tough as nails according to his coach, Kevin was putting in 85 mile weeks during the summer. Great strength…ready to lead this Sandburg team to greatness. Ryan Weber, SR, Cary-Grove 51st – 15:09 Had a sub-par junior season according to his coach. Weber has been running stronger than last year and should be up towards the front at state. Sagar Patel, SR, Palatine 52nd – 15:10 Had a great summer training…has been running stride for stride with Smoody in workouts…9:32 3200 speed. Will be up front for Coach Chris Quick. Chase Kadlec, JR, Wheaton North 55th – 15:13 A junior with loads of talent…just coming into his own. Could be all-state…definite favorite in the DVC. Tom Robbins, SR, Wilmette Loyola Academy 56th – 15:14 Has great speed (1:54, 4:16)…according to his coach Dan Seeburg “ we’ve just scratched the surface with him. Tremendous speed…mentally, very focused and intense. Very intelligent. Looking to go to school at Harvard, Princeton, or Dartmouth.” TR Pursell, SR, Bartonville Limestone 59th – 15:16 Looks to return to his 3rd state meet….hopefully this time with his team…great strength runner. |
