Event Preview:
Vernon George stamped himself as the early favorite in this event with strong
post season last summer. George will have plenty of company with him…5
other state finalists return as well. Roger Jones stayed away from the
injury bug that haunted him his sophomore season and had a breakout
junior year. He will push George. Tim Williams jumped well at the end of
the year, which earned him all state honors. Justin Smith had a great
breakout meet at IPTT…now he will have to sustain it during the outdoor
season.

will need to achieve some more consistency this spring. Tim Williams is
another jumper who needs to be steadier…he has the talent to challenge.

TEAM PREVIEWS
East St.
Louis-Senior
The one school that can
knock off two time defending champ Cahokia. The Flyers are loaded in the
sprints led by JaVaughn Tabbs, Tommie Hopkins, and Evan Johnson. Mario
McCottrell will be tough in the 400 or the 800, which ever he is put in.
Kraig Appelton will challenge in both hurdle races along with Ryan
Miller. Their sprint relays will be tough…besides the distance races,
Eastside will need someone to step up in the field events.
Springfield
Lanphier
Will push East St
Louis. The Lions return a strong sprint crew, led by Jacob Mitchell and
Warnether Banks. Their 4x1 and 4x2 relays have a shot at winning. The
key for Lanphier will be in the field events with Justin Smith in the
Long Jump, Cheldon Brown in the High Jump, and George Weed in the weight
events.
Cahokia
The two time defending
champs have the talent to defend, but Lanphier and ESL look like they
have a little more. They will rely in their Field events with Kendrick
McRath in the Triple Jump and the High Jump, and London Davis in the
Weight Events. Cahokia always is strong in the sprints and will be led
by Earnest Winters and Shannon Cannon. Darien Donald will be tough in
the 400. Should score high in the relays.
Aurora West
Could surprise some
people…they have a bevy of talent in the sprints led by Junior Josh
Zinzer, Shot Putter Juan Perez, and Horizontal Jumpers Joel Vincent and
Colton Winston.
Bloomington
Could challenge for a
team trophy but will depend if sprinter Darian Davis competes this
spring. Hurdler Tyler Sipes will provide points in the hurdles. The
Raiders will have good 4 x2 and 4x4 relays.
Belleville
East
Roger Jones leads this
squad in the Long Jump and sprints. Joshua Burrow is primed for a break
out season in the 400. Darryl Rice was a nice surprise in the High Jump,
and could challenge for the State Championship. Justin Washington will
be tough in the hurdles. Also watch their 4x1 and 4x2 relays.
