-Class AA Girls Weekly Recap-

*Week #7- week of 10/9/06

#1 Hinsdale Central- “tied” then #4 York 44-44 in WSC Silver championship but was awarded first place trophy because of 6th runner rule.  The Red Devils were in a tight battle with York the entire race as the Dukettes plated the first two runners.  HC countered with four runners in the top 12.  It appeared that pack running played the biggest part in the victory.  Sophomore Lauren Zumbach placed 4th for the Red Devils; next is Hinsdale Central Regional on 10/21.

#2 Barrington- survived a scare from then #8 Palatine Fremd to capture its second MSL title 63-65.  The Fillies trailed much of the race until its formable trio of Samantha Learch, Danielle Locascio, and Rebecca Tracy powered home down the stretch with 5,7,8 finishes.  One of Barrington’s top runners, freshman Melissa Brindise, was out with the flu.  Junior Kala Bingham filled in and placed 21st; next is Rolling Meadows Regional on 10/21.

#3 Roselle (Lake Park) - won the UEC championship crown in dominating fashion.  The Lancers left no doubt that they are the queens of the Upstate 8 Conference by crushing upstarts St. Charles North and #18 Naperville Neuqua Valley, scoring 43 points to 68 and 71.  The Lancers were led by sophomore Lindsay Flanagan’s 4th place effort (18:04).  LP went on to place four other scorers in the top 15.  LP scoring sheet= 4, 6, 7, 12, 14, [16], [20]; next is Lake Park Regional on 10/21.

#4 Elmhurst (York) - the Dukettes continued to impress by “tying” #1 Hinsdale Central but was awarded second place honors virtue of the 6th man scoring.  York started the scoring off with 1-2 finishes courtesy of senior Laurie Dalrymple and junior Maggie Sack.  Christie Caron aided York’s effort in 5th place.  The Dukettes can walk way with a moral victory in that, the state’s best team appears to be beatable (or close to it); next is Proviso West Regional on 10/21.

#5 Naperville North- won DVC championship scoring 27 pts.  The Huskies placed three runners in the top five and never looked back as they distanced themselves from then #6 Wheaton North.  Junior Elle Metz took honors in a blustery produced 18:43.  It appears that the Huskies are getting primed for their annual post-season run; next is Hinsdale Central Regional on 10/21.

#6 Wheaton North- placed 2nd in DVC with 67 pts.  The depleted Falcons were led by freshman Kelsey Tharnstrom (3rd-18:47).  The Falcons suffered a two devastating blows as their two leaders and top runners junior Jackie Laesch and senior Cassidy Wagner are out for the season.  It appears the Falcons pre-season state trophy chances are in doubt.  Stay tuned; next is Wheaton North Regional on 10/21.

#7 Edwardsville- finished second in SW Conference championships.  The Tigerettes ran mostly a junior varsity squad as they prepare for the rigors of a tough state tournament march.  Only two of the top seven raced against winner Mt. Vernon.  Expect a more serious effort this upcoming weekend at regionals; next is Wood River Regional on 10/21.

#8 Palatine Fremd- the Vikings ran their best race of the season by finishing runner-up to a tough #2 Barrington squad.  Everything was set up by Chelsea Bolton’s great performance.  The senior ace harrier held intact with two other runners through 2.75 miles before pulling away for the four- second victory in 18:24.  The win served as a reminder of everything that has transpired to her in the past year (injury during track campaign).  The Viking pack snowballed Bolton’s effort with 14,15,17,18 efforts.  Senior Alison Neubauer led the charge that resulted in a sweet three-second split; next is Rolling Meadows Regional on 10/21.

#9 Chicago (Mother McAuley)- won GCAC championship by 10 points over then #25 Loyola Academy.  The Mighty now turn their marvelous regular season to the post-season; next is Reavis Regional on 10/21.

#10 East Peoria- (10/13) - The Raiders continue to steamroll through central Illinois as they easily won the Illini-States Conference championship by scoring 28 points to 66 for Bartonville Limestone.  Junior Emily Gustafson placed second overall in her team’s 2, 4, 5,6,11 output; next is Metamora Regional on 10/21.

#11 Lisle (Benet Academy) - won 13th consecutive ESCC title by scoring a scant 27pts.  It was absolutely no contest for the Redwings as they distanced themselves from second place Marian Catholic (96pts).  Abby Higgins won in 17:46.  Her teammates produced 4, 5, and 6 over the next ten spots; next is Hinsdale Central Regional on 10/21.

#12 Orland Park (Sandburg)- finished second to then #16 Lockport 36-35 in Southwest Suburban Blue championship.  The Eagles fell on the short end by junior Kristin Sutherland’s runner-up finish (17:54).  The Eagles appear to have more depth the Lockport but in a five-team meet, every place counts; next is Bremen Regional on 10/21.

#13 Palatine- the up and down Pirates finished third in MSL championship with 80 pts.  Senior Michelle Brunk led her team with a 4th place effort (18:43).  No other Pirate finished in the top 10 as their pack was too spaced out to cover Barrington and Fremd; next is Wheeling Regional on 10/21.

#14 Tinley Park (Andrew)- placed second to then #19 Lincoln-Way East in the five- team Southwest Suburban Red championship.  The T-Bolts scored 40 points to LWE’s 31.  Kailyn Kuzmuk won in 17:43; next is Bremen Regional on 10/21.

#15 Downers Grove South- the Mustangs enjoyed their annual WSC Gold championship by placing all five scorers in the top ten= 2, 3,4,8,9 for 26pts.  The 1-5 spread was 41 seconds; next is Hinsdale Central Regional on 10/21.

#16 Lockport- won SWSC Blue championship by one point over #12 Sandburg.  For the first time this season, the Porters have their “A-team” line up.  Sophomore Janna Mitsos won overall but it was a healthy Elizabeth Phillips in third place and just four seconds back that put smiles on the Lockport fans.  In addition, key runner Erin Lakie is back to complete a top state trio.  However, there will still be question marks on whether the Porters can shore up the more important 4th and 5th scorers; next is Bremen Regional on 10/21.

#17 Mahomet-Seymour- won Cornbelt Conference championship scoring 24 pts.  M-S stacked its five scorers in the top ten: 2, 4, 5, 6, 7; next up is Urbana Regional on 10/21.

#18 Naperville (Neuqua Valley) - perhaps a little letdown after joining the elite top 25.  NV placed a disappointing third at UEC championships behind Lake Park and unranked St. Charles North.  Freshman Megan Taylor led her team in 9th (18:34).  NV’s 71 pts came via 9, 10, 11, 19, and 22; next is Hinsdale Central Regional on 10/21.

#19 Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East) - won SWSC Red championship crown over then #14 Andrew.  The Griffins were led Maggie Sutor’s runner-up finish.  Four more Griffins crossed the line in the top ten; next is Rich East Regional on 10/21.

#20 Palos Hill (Stagg) - placed third behind two fine teams (Lockport and Sandburg) in SWSC Blue meet with 53pts.  Annette Glaz led her team with a 4th place finish; next is Reavis Regional on 10/21.

#21 Batavia- won Western Sun Conference championship

#22 LaGrange (Lyons Township) - placed 4th in WSC Silver championship with 99 pts.  No Lyons runner was among the top ten; next is Argo Regional on 10/21.

#23 Cary-Grove- the Trojans won their third consecutive Fox Valley title.  They actually tied with Prairie Ridge scoring 62 pts but won based on a better 6th runner finish; next is Woodstock Regional on 10/21.

#24 Oak Park-River Forest- placed third in WSC Silver championship with 91 pts.  Katherine Rack was the only Huskie in the top 10; next is Oak Park-River Forest Regional on 10/21.

#25 Wilmette (Loyola Academy)- placed 2nd in the GCAC meet to then #9 Mother McAuley; next is Loyola Academy Regional on 10/21.

9)     Stephanie Strasser (Fr.) St. Charles North- ran well against Hynes once more at conference action.

12) Kalli Dalton (So.) Hoffman Estates (Conant)- a bad race and sinus infection equals 6th place in MSL championship.
