Girls AA Top 25 Team Wrap-up

*Week 1

#1 Lockport- Had a blitzkrieg through quadrangular vs. Shepard, Bolingbrook, and Homewood-Flossmoor (19-44/15-50/15-49) on 8/29.  Janna Mitsos navigated the 3-mile course in 18:26 with teammate Gina Montagno third; next up is Peoria Woodruff Invitational 9/9.

#2 Naperville North- 2nd at Pleasant Valley, Iowa Invitational; next is Lake Park Invite 9/9. 

#3 Wheaton North- varsity was idle; showdown with Midwest’s top team (Westfield, Indiana) at Peoria Woodruff Invite 9/9.

#4 Hinsdale Central- won own Hornet Invitational in fine fashion (30pts).  The Red Devils led by sophomore Lauren Zumbach placed five runners in the top 10; next is Lake Park Invite 9/9.

#5 St. Charles East- finished 3rd at home (St. Charles East Invite) with 138 pts; the Saints were led by individual champion Lizzy Hynes in 17:49; next up for the Saints is the Rosary Invitational on Saturday.

#6 Edwardsville- varsity was idle; season debut is Peoria Woodruff Invite 9/9.

#7 Barrington- placed 2nd at St. Charles East Invitational with 56 pts.  Samantha Learch finished third in 18:06 leading the Fillies; Peoria Woodruff Invite is next 9/9.

#8 Wheeling- [8/31] - lost to unranked Hoffman Estates (Conant) 29-26.  Amber Stack took top honors, besting Conant’s Kalli Dalton by 39 seconds 19:08-19:47; next is Lake Park Invitational on 9/9.

#9 Palatine- placed 2nd at the Hinsdale Central Hornet Invite with 83pts.  The Pirates were led by Colleen Standridge in 5th place; next is a dual Thursday vs. Fremd at Deer Grove.

#10 Palatine Fremd- [8/31] - won dual meet vs. 15-50 over Rolling Meadows; the Vikings were led by the 1-2 punch of Alison Neubauer and Chelsea Bolton.  The duo both clocked 20:25 for 3 miles, but Neubauer was officially credited with the victory; next is dual on Thursday 9/7 at Palatine, Peoria Woodruff on 9/9.

#11 Cary-Grove- varsity did not compete; at Wauconda Invitational on 9/9.

#12 Lisle (Benet Academy)- won Plainfield Central Invite with 19pts; Abby Higgins returns in old form (18:33) for the win- team scoring went 1,2,3,5,9; next up is ?

#13 Roselle (Lake Park)- won Fenton “Early Bird” Invite over #20 Oak Park-River Forest 59-92.  The Lancers placed all seven scorers in the top 35.  Trisha Ehrhardt and Lindsay Flanagan both clocked 19:06, finishing fourth and fifth; next is Lake Park Invite 9/9.

#14 Palos Park (Stagg) - [8/30] won Stagg Invite with 15 pts on the strength of Kara Moylan (20:01), Annette Glaz (20:02), and Krista Moylan (20:03); placed 3rd at Hinsdale Central/South Hornet Invite with 101 pts; next is Reavis Invitational on 9/9.

#15 Evanston- placed 9th at Hinsdale Central Hornet Invite with 23 pts; Katherine Page and Natalie Fenn paced the Wildkits with top 20 finishes; next is Peoria Woodruff Invite on 9/9.

#16 Tinley Park (Andrew) - varsity did not compete; Reavis Invite on 9/9.

#17 East Peoria- won Canton Invitational with 5-8 place scoring assisted by team leader Emily Gustafson; next is a tri meet vs. Canton & Morton on 9/12

#18 Mahomet-Seymour- varsity did not compete; Peoria Woodruff Invite is next at 9/9.

#19 Wilmette (Loyola Academy) - varsity did not compete; Peoria Woodruff on 9/9.

#20 Oak Park-River Forest- placed 2nd at Fenton “Early Bird”.  Katherine Rack was runner-up to Conant’s Kalli Dalton in 18:52.  The Huskies scored 92 pts; next is Lake Park Invite on 9/9.

#21 Normal Community- won Normal Community Open with 37 pts.  NCHS completed 1,6,8,10,12 scoring.  Olivia Myers earned top honors (19:18-3m).

#22 Winnetka (New Trier) - finished 7th at Hinsdale Central “Hornet”; next is Peoria Woodruff Invite on 9/9.

#23 LaGrange (Lyons Township) - placed 5th in Lyons Invite.  Team leader Jane Simpson led the Lion attack with a forth place finish (18:08); next is Reavis Invite on 9/9.

#24 Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East) - placed second to perennial state power Valparaiso, Indiana (#3 in Indiana) 72-62.  The Griffins ran extremely well against one of the best teams in the Midwest.  Maggie Sutor (5th-18:09) and Stephanie Gabrys (8th-18:21) led the Griffin attack.

#25 Elmhurst (York) - won St. Charles East Invitational over #7 Barrington 49-56.  The Lady Dukes sealed the victory with key and decisive scoring: 4, 5, 6, placing.  Junior Maggie Sack led the charge (18:08); next is Lake Park Invitational on 9/9.

Class AA Girls Top 25 Individual Rankings

1)       Caitlin Comfort (Jr.) Peoria (Notre Dame)- finished second to #1 overall Illinois runner Katelyn Bastert (Carthage) at the Canton Invite.  Comfort closed the gap mightily from last year’s affair (18:18-18:28).

2)       Amber Stack (Jr.) Wheeling- opened her season in fine fashion with a win over Kalli Dalton.  Stack ran a solid time of 19:08, nearly 40 seconds in front of Dalton.

3)       Kalli Dalton (So.)  Hoffman Estates (Conant) - ran two races during the week: one loss and one victory.  Dalton took second to Stack in a mid-week dual and then went on to win against a solid field at Fenton Invitational.

4)       Lizzy” Hynes (So.)  St. Charles East- won the big race of the weekend at SCE Invitational against a solid field.

5)       Lauren Zumbach (So.)  Hinsdale Central- took top honors in her home opener at Hornet Invitational by over 20 seconds.

6)       Jackie Laesch (Jr.) Wheaton North- idle during the week; will be in action this weekend in Peoria Woodruff Invite

7)       Kristin Sutherland (So.)  Orland Park (Sandburg)- placed a big 2nd at Lyons; defeated state champion

8)       Nicole Benson (Jr.) Bartonville (Limestone) - placed 4th at Canton Invite to Bastert and Comfort.

9)       Heather Olson (So.)  Gurnee (Warren) - made her season debut a good one with a victory at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside sponsored meet: Rebel Invitational.  Olson defeated a solid field that included a host of all-state runners from the Badger state.  Olson clocked a time of 14:53 for 4k on the rugged nationally known course.

10)    Lauren Haberkorn (Jr.) Chicago (Marist) - the pre-season #1 pick and defending state champion may not be primed (yet) after third place showing at Lyons Twp Invite.

11)    Chelsea Bolton (Sr.) Palatine Fremd- won her first meet in a dual.

12)    Jane Simpson (Jr.) LaGrange (Lyons Township)- placed a solid 4th at Lyons Invite

13)     Abby Higgins (Sr.) Lisle (Benet Academy) - Higgins is 100% healthy.  Got her season off to good start with invitational victory at Plainfield Central.

14)     Michelle Stratton (So.)  Naperville North- took 5th place in Pleasant Valley, Iowa Invite.

15)    Stephanie Strasser (Fr.) St. Charles North- placed 2nd in her first varsity race to Lizzy Hynes.

16)    Ashley Verplank (Jr.) Bloomington- took second in Chicagoland debut.

17)    Stephanie Peisker (So.)  Crystal Lake Central- won Fox Valley meet against tough competition.
